Un-fold Collective

The Un-fold Collective is a group of creative businesses working in the Lake District.  They held a Christmas Craft & Design Market at the Shakespeare Centre in Kendal from the 4th to the 6th of December 2009, and we were chosen as the local Charity to benefit from the proceeds of their raffle.  All we had to do was attend over the 3 days and sell raffle tickets.  The prizes were items of work donated by the exhibitors and were of a very high quality.  Over £500 was raised for the Team and we would like to thank the members of the Collective for their generosity.

Another Great Donation

The Team would like to thank the Buffs and all at the Sawyers Arms in Kendal for their efforts throughout the year collecting money for us, including the “thongathon” (don’t ask!!!). During a great “Race Night” at the pub we were presented with two cheques totalling £1,300. Brilliant!

Ministerial Visit to Floods - 23 November 2009

The Team’s two Land Rovers were used to transport Lord McKenzie (Health & Safety Minister), Councillor Brendan Jameson (Leader of South Lakes District Council) and Philippa Cook (Corporate Director of SLDC) to see the flood damage in South Lakeland. The party inspected the damage in Burneside and Bowness and they spoke to local residents and business people in Ambleside and Ulverston.

Daniel Wright

Just after we released the Mayor from our stretcher we were introduced to young Daniel Wright from Crosby in Liverpool. Daniel had become interested in the Team after finding out about Kendal Mintcake. He had done a sponsored 3 km run in London for our benefit and presented us with over £400! As a big “thank you” we paraded Daniel around the Town Centre on our stretcher and he was taken for a tour of our base and a ride in one of our Land Rovers.

Kendal Mountain Festival

Team members accompanied our new Land Rover vehicle at the Bird Cage in the Town Centre and staffed a stand in the Marquee at the Brewery Arts Centre. It was good to have an opportunity to chat to so many people about the Team’s work and we were extremely grateful for the donations received. The Team would like to thank the Mountain Festival organisers for their support and the visitors at the Brewery Arts for drinking the KMR Special beer.

During this time we ran a competition to guess the weight of the new Land Rover, complete with all the Team’s kit. The winner of the competition was James Snell of Great Ayton, North Yorkshire with a guess of 2,465 kg. The actual weight was 2,460 kg. and James has won a day out training with the Team (date to be arranged).

Climb For Kendal

The Team participated in the Mayor’s Climb for Kendal event. The Mayor was transported on a stretcher from the top of Beast Banks down to the Bird Cage in the Town Centre.

Barbara’s Tree

On Sunday 15 November 2009 the Team were joined by members of Barbara Minton’s family when they planted a tree in her memory. Barbara was a Vice President of the Team for many years and her tree was planted in Kentmere close to the tree planted for her husband Tom. Tom was a previous Team Chairman and President.

AGM – 4 November 2009

Apart from the usual matters dealt with at the Team’s AGM, there was a need to elect some new Team Officers. Our Team Leader, Andy Dell, stood down after a total of 13 years in the post and our Treasurer, Julia Pittman, also opted for a well earned rest. The new Treasurer was an easy matter – Terry Simpkin was happy to take over the role. The new Team Leader was also an easy matter and Eddie Harrison was elected unopposed. However, Eddie’s appointment created a vacancy for a Deputy Team Leader and after a certain amount of “nudging” Kathy Jackson was proposed for this role. Kathy was also elected unopposed but this created the need for a new News Letter Editor! There was a short recess (during which time most experienced team members kept their heads down). Dave Hughes made the mistake of smiling when his name was mentioned and so he was elected to the job unopposed.

WHEELS APPEAL

We need to replace one of our ageing Land Rover vehicles (shown here with one of our ageing Deputy Team Leaders - who is not to be replaced) and the current cost estimate is in the order of £40.000.  Any donations would be very gratefully appreciated.

Everest Climbed in Kendal

The Team participated in the Climb for Kendal event on Saturday 22 November. The event was organised by the Town Mayor, Clare Feeney-Johnson, and participants were invited to contribute to climbing Everest by walking from the Birdcage in Finkle Street to the top of Beast Bank. 177 such climbs were the equivalent to climbing Everest. Everest had been climbed shortly after 11 am and it was scaled a total of 6.84 times during the day.

Apart from adding numerous ascents to the total, Team members took the stretcher to the top of Beast Bank and transported the Mayor down to the Birdcage. Money raised from the event was in the order of £4,000 and went to the Mayor's chosen charities.

Fireworks Donation

Our Chairman, Trevor Cotton, was delighted to accept a cheque for £2000 on behalf of LDSAMRA. The money was raised from the Lakeland Radio sponsored Firework Display and was presented by the Licensee of the Station Inn, Oxenholme.

Garburn Trail Race

On 31 May 2008, several team members and team supporters acted as officials at the Garburn Trail Race. A couple of team members also took part in the race. The team benefited significantly from generous donations and would like to record it's thanks to the organisers.

Keswick to Barrow Walk

Each year the Kendal Mountain Search and Rescue Team enter a team in the Keswick to Barrow Walk to raise funds for the Team.  The event starts at 6am, so the walkers and runners meet at 4.45am at the Team’s Base to get to the start on time.  Each participant has to find sponsorship from friends and family, and many sponsor themselves.  This year twenty one superheroes walked or ran for the Team. The early morning start meant the air was initially cool but as the day progressed the sun grew hotter making the walkers and runners suffer.  You feel a great sense of achievement when you pass the finish line and realise you have walked or run 40 miles. The Keswick to Barrow Walk Committee give all finishers a medal, a certificate, a pint of beer (or soft drink if prefered) and a pie which you’ll never in your life appreciate more. We hope to raise enough funds from our efforts to help the Team purchase ten search torches.

On the evening of Thursday 20 November 2008, John Hall was presented with a cheque for the Team in the sum of £2,000 + £641.58 from Gift Aid donations by the Keswick to Barrow Walk Committee.

Former Kendal MRT Member and daughter of the present Chairman, Esther Tessem-Cotton, is shown here arriving for her recent wedding at Tangihau, New Zealand. The Vehicle Officer hopes she remembers that it is the driver's responsibility to wash the vehicle before it is put away. By the way - I just love the boots!

Sunday 3rd June 2007:

The Team provided marshalls for the Garburn Trail Race, for which we were the nominated charity. Over 500 competitors took part, all helping to raise much needed funds for the Team. During the event one of our Landrover Ambulances was deployed to transfer an injured competitor to Westmorland General Hospital.

New Vehicle Bulletin : MOBILE 2

Our "Wheels Appeal", together with the generous donations made by local companies and individuals, and a sum from our reserve funds enabled us to purchase a new Renault Traffic in 2005. The vehicle was supplied by Benfields in Kendal and the specialised conversion work, to provide personnel carrier and ambulance capabilities, was carried out by Oughtred & Harrison in Goole, East Yorkshire.
